Sweet Dreams is a comprehensive course on the importance of sleep for mental and physical wellbeing. It will look at the latest scientific research on sleep and will delve into physical and psychological  techniques for managing the most common factors that negatively impact our sleep patterns. Over the 8’weeks areas such as worry, stress, overthinking, chronic pain, menopause and side effects from medication will all be discussed looking at both psychological and practical techniques that can help restore good sleeping patterns.

The course will cover the following key areas:

  • Understanding Sleep and Its Importance: Explore the science of sleep, including its stages and the effects of sleep deprivation on mental and physical health.
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) & Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques: Learn how to identify and challenge  or defuse away from negative thought patterns, including worry and rumination, that contribute to anxiety and stress around sleep. Techniques such as cognitive restructuring, cognitive defusion, sleep hygiene, and behavioural interventions will be emphasized.
  • Mindfulness Practices: Gain skills in mindfulness meditation, breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation to enhance self-awareness and reduce stress. Participants will practice techniques that promote relaxation and help quiet the mind before sleep.
  • Managing Chronic Pain: Discover strategies to cope with chronic pain that disrupts sleep, including mindfulness-based pain management techniques and the role of physical therapy.
  • Addressing Medication Side Effects: Understand how certain medications can affect sleep and explore alternatives or adjustments in consultation with healthcare providers.
  • Navigating Menopause: Learn about the impact of menopause on sleep and effective strategies to manage symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings that interfere with restful sleep.
  • The importance of exercise and a good daily routine to promote sleep.
  • Creating a Personalised Sleep Plan: Participants will develop individualised sleep plans that incorporate the techniques learned throughout the course, tailored to their specific challenges and needs.
  • By the end of this comprehensive course, attendees will have a robust toolkit of psychological and practical strategies to improve their sleep quality and overall well-being, even in the face of stressors and health challenges.

This programme will run on a Wednesday morning 10am – 12Noon from 22nd January 2025
